Sertaç Özdemir works with various medias and deals with body and gender issues, clichés, expectations and narratives from a postmigrant perspective, often filtered through his Turkish-Kurdish family history. He is questioning in his work identity, transformation and transgression of him as somebody who belongs either to the German and Turkish culture.
Process-based handwork plays a central role in his practice. The artist consciously chooses textile production with a female connotation. His works can also be understood as critical comments on consumer society.
„The artist Sertaç Özdemir creates fascinating experiential spaces with his works, where textiles, the body, and space poetically merge. His works, which range from performances and installations to video pieces and sound projects, invite the viewer to reflect on boundaries, identity, and cultural influences. Özdemir combines personal experiences, mythological motifs, and socio-political issues with a deep engagement with materiality and form (...)
With a clear focus on materiality and a distinctive narrative style, Özdemir connects personal stories with universal themes such as belonging and transformation“
